Orientation Program 1: Introduction to Child Protection and Signs of Safety
This Program is a five day course designed to give an introduction to service delivery staff of the key knowledge and skills required to respond to child abuse and neglect, as well as work effectively with children, young people and families in a child protection context.
Introduction to Child Protection (3 Days)
Outcomes:
- Explain and apply the Department’s legislation and frameworks;
- Summarise their roles and responsibilities under the legislation
- Apply the Department’s principles and practices to effectively engage with children, young people and families;
- Work collaboratively with foster carers, Departmental colleagues and relevant agencies;
- Assess and make decisions in a child protection context; and
- Develop and review a case plan for working with the child, young person and his/her family
Introduction to Signs of Safety (2 Days)
Outcomes:
- Discuss the role of DCP and agencies in Child Protection.
- Overview of the Principles and Disciplines of the Signs of Safety Framework.
- Integration of the Signs of Safety Child Protection Framework into the Department for Child Protection when working with children, families and communities to build child safety.
- Overview of the Signs of Safety tools used when working with children.
- Mapping of a ‘real case’ to demonstrate the process of Signs of Safety.
